Snow, snow, snow

While I'm posting older pictures, here's my backyard during a February snowstorm:

The picture was taken with my Canon S200, an ultracompact camera which has served me reliably and well for the past three years. Despite its loyal service, I may wind up trading it in for a newer SD400. It's an even smaller camera, 5MP and a few minor improvements. What really is astonishing is the quality of movies that it is capable of taking. Take a look at Dpreview's movie samples, and be amazed.

The other possibility is the SD400's big brother, the Canon SD500. That's roughly the same size as the S200, though much more capable. Oddly enough, the even more cutting-edge SD450 and SD550 don't seem very appealing; the main change seems to have been introducing a larger LCD panel. But in order to enlarge the LCD, they had to trim the size of the viewfinder. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for my wallet), I'm fond of viewfinders. This doesn't make upgrading to the "latest and greatest" Canons particularly compelling.

Searching through old e-mail folders, I turned up this wonderful picture my Dad took during last year's emergence of the seventeen-year cicadas:

cicada in asparagus

I saw a handful this year, one or two of whom looked like stragglers. It must be terrible, spending all those years munching on tree roots, a hibernation, and finally heading out into the outside world, whereupon you discover you've overslept.
